The Dallas County 4-H and Clover Kids clubs will join forces in a county-wide service learning project event addressing the barriers faced by older Dallas County residents and the resources available to help them.

The free event will be held April 7 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Dallas County Fairgrounds community building, where booths sponsored by service organizations will offer a range of activities and learning opportunities for older adults.

“Our goal of this county-wide service project is to make connections between youth and older adults to discover the richness this can bring to everyone,” said Dallas County Extension EDucator Lisa Mickelson. “We want to build ongoing relationships and provide mutual help and support, educate youth on some of the barriers faced by older adults — like transportation, food insecurity, health and safety, legal, financial and others — and see  what can be done to assist in some of these areas.”

The 4-H and Clover Kids clubs will also have displays on how they have served Dallas County older adults and will lead hands-on activities such as making greeting cards and sock cupcake gifts.

Donations, such as shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste and small prizes will be accepted for personal care packets and BINGO prizes. These items will be distributed to Dallas County retirement living communities.

The event will include refreshments and door prizes. The community is encouraged to attend. To find out more, contact ISU Extension and Outreach Dallas County at 515-993-4281.
