As if demonstrating the public-health value of social distancing, the Dallas County Freedom Rock was closed to public viewing this week and covered with a tent that looks like a stay-at-home face mask.
Painted in July 2019 and dedicated in October 2019, the Dallas County Freedom Rock was struck by a vehicle Dec. 7 and toppled, leaving the monument scuffed and scraped but still proud.
Freedom Rock artist and Iowa legislator Rep. Ray “Bubba” Sorensen of Greenfield, who represents Iowa House District 20, which includes Perry, Dawson and Linden in Dallas County, has pledged to restore the artwork.
The Minburn American Legion Post 99 contracted with Sorensen in2017 to paint the 18-ton boulder, which was donated by Dennis Allen of Herndon and placed in Minburn April 28, 2018. The full Dallas County Freedom Rock project cost an estimated $18,000.
