According to a report filed Monday morning by Dallas County Deputy Sheriff Jeff Larson, Owen Dean Zander, 6, son of Jennifer Zander of 205 S. First St. in Dawson, “suffered minor scrapes to the right side of his body” in the event.

Zander was taken by ambulance to the Dallas County Hospital at about 7:10 p.m.

Dawson Volunteer Fire Chief Bill Kemp, a first responder early on scene, said the child did not appear badly injured. He said he could see Zander had a contusion on his abdomen but did not see evidence of broken bones.

“This was bound to happen the way kids run across this street along here,” Kemp said.

According to Larson’s report, the driver of the vehicle, Carol Lack of Des Moines, 52, said the youngster darted out right in front of her car, and she “slammed on her brakes and swerved toward the center line.”

Lack told the deputy sheriff said she did not know whether Zander was hit but that he “did get up and run off” after the encounter.

Lack told ThePerryNews.com she had spent the day visiting her parents and the cemetery in Jefferson and drove through Jamaica before coming to Dawson.

Bobby Morman of Dawson, who lives near the scene of the accident, said children frequently runs across S. First Street in Dawson.

“When I first heard it, I thought it was him,” Morman said, looking at the youngster next to him

No charges were filed in the incident.

  1. I live on that street and people drive like idiots along it. In front of our house is 25 and people go by doing 50+ easily all the time!!!

  2. I’m so glad that this doesn’t mention the fact this WOMAN was speeding through the area and that my son tried to stop and tripped on the edge of the road! Thank you for making this all sound like it’s his fault!!

    • “No charges have been filed at this time, and the condition of Zander is unknown. ThePerryNews.com will update this story when more information becomes available.”

      Hope your boy’s okay.

    • The kids run across that road too much! So do the dogs! Maybe if you guys would watch them, it wouldn’t happen! Don’t blame the driver! She didn’t know that the kids weren’t told not to play in the street when cars are coming! I feel bad for the child and the driver!

      • Dearest Miss Kalyn, If you would like to come up and ask the kids around here if they are “allowed to play in the street,” be my guest. I guarantee you will find otherwise.
        –Mother of the small boy.

    • How do you know there was speeding? Do you have radar? Just wondering, but that’s none of my business. Neither is the fact that he got up and ran away.

  3. The kids were being watched!! The little boy wanted to cross the road to see his mother at my house! He went to stop for the car but tripped on the road and fell into the road!! I have lived across from this house for 15 years and raised 1 son already and I have another son that plays with this little boy! They know to stay out of the road! The speed limit is 25MPH!! If this happened on a side street, no one would question it, but because we live on a highway it’s our fault because drivers don’t follow the speed limit…..don’t think so!! Why don’t people come and sit on our road and see how many “actually follow the speed limit.”
