A Des Moines man was arrested Monday morning on U.S. Interstate 80 when he was discovered to be a felon in possession of a firearm.
Bendigo Jibo Augustino, 29, of 926 Oakridge Dr., Des Moines, was charged with dominion/control of firearm/offensive weapon by a felon.
The incident began about 11:15 a.m. Monday near the 80 mile marker of eastbound U.S. Interstate 80, where an Iowa State Patrol Trooper initiated a traffic stop on an allegedly speeding 2019 Chevrolet Cruze.
According to court records, Jibo Augustino was the front-seat passenger in the vehicle. When the driver was found to lack a valid driver’s license, the trooper asked to see Jibo Augustino’s identification in order to determine whether he was a valid driver.
A records check revealed Jibo Augustino had an arrest warrant out of Polk County for possessing a firearm as a felon, drug possession, malicious prosecution and interference with official acts and a warrant out of Sac County for forgery.
According to court records, a “wingspan search of the front passenger seat in the suspect vehicle revealed a black EZ9 9 millimeter handgun inside of a small black bag, loaded with 12 rounds in the magazine and a round in the chamber.”
The trooper also allegedly fond a “marijuana container” with “raw marijuana residue” and a 9 millimeter slug in the pocket of a pair of pants in the trunk. The trunk also contained a backpack in which the trooper found “a silver airsoft handgun that looked very similar to a
real handgun.”
The driver said the pants and the backpack belonged to the Jibo Augustino.
Jibo Augustino is held in the Dallas County Jail on a $5,000 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled to make an initial appearance Tuesday in Dallas County District Court.
