Private family services are planned for Dylan Jesse Butler, 17, of Perry, who died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2024, in Perry, Iowa.

Dylan was born in Des Moines, Iowa, to Jack and Erin (Munson) Butler on Oct. 11, 2006.

For the first 10 years of his life, the family lived on an acreage outside of Jamaica.

There he loved to be outside and especially loved fishing and trips to the sandbar on their Yamaha Rhino. Dylan loved to play in the snow and was best friends with the neighbor’s dogs, Roxy and Fire.

His little sister, Chloe, was born in 2011. (He never quite got over the loss of his only child status).

The family moved into Perry, where Dylan enjoyed the above-ground pool on the patio and running around with the neighborhood kids.

In 2022 the family built a new home surrounded by timber, where Dylan loved to explore with his sister and mushroom hunt with his dad.

Dylan was a music lover and listened to several genres of music. He got his love for all things ’80s from his mom. He took piano lessons for a few years and later learned how to play the guitar.

He had a great sense of humor and loved watching “Trailer Park Boys.” He also loved going for country drives and listening to music.

Dylan was kind of a picky eater and loved his mac-n-cheese, pizza and chicken wings, all drenched in buffalo sauce. He washed it down with either sweet tea or ginger beer.

He recently discovered his love of tacos from the taco truck with a grilled jalapeno (like his dad, he loved all things hot and spicy).

Dylan was a kindhearted soul and had a compassionate and caring heart and was accepting of everyone. He liked all things vintage and nostalgic.

Waiting for him in heaven was his Grandpa, Joe Butler; Kenny (the cat); and several great-grandparents.

Dylan is survived by his parents, Jack and Erin Butler; and his younger sister, Chloe Butler, all of Perry; grandmothers, Barb Butler of Perry and Pam Munson of Madrid; grandfather, Ray Munson of Woodward; aunts, Kari (Tony) Vess of Norman, Oklahoma, Tami Lamon of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Julie (Ryan) Larue of Ankeny; uncle, Eric Munson of Ankeny; cousins Breana, Gina, Tasha, Melissa, Cody, Faith, Lochlan, Addi and Owen; cats, Penny, Milo and Ruby.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Racoon Valley Pet Rescue.

  1. I am so sorry for your loss. May God give you comfort and strength to carry on now and into the future. Cherish the good memories you shared with Dylan.

  2. I don’t know who these people are in the comments, but he KILLED two people. Do you understand that? How can these people be sad for him? He killed himself. He had the choice to die or live with the consequences of his actions. A little boy died, with a whole life ahead of him, and Dylan took that way from him and his family and friends. He does NOT deserve to “RIP.” He should rest in pieces. Did he even know the kid he shot and killed? What about the principal? What did the principal ever do to Dylan? My school had a lockdown because of the school shooting in Perry, and they didn’t know if the shooter was on the loose though he was already dead by that time. My friend actually knew the kid he killed, and she went to the funeral and went right back to school because it was the last day of the semester. She couldn’t even take the day off to grieve. She had to put schoolwork first, and she shouldn’t have to make that choice. She only just transferred to my school a few months before from Perry. Imagine how terrible that was for her and so many others.
