Saving the stranded owl Saturday morning were Carol Martinez, top left, Edis Martinez, top right, Jordan Martinez, 9, bottom left, and Dyland Martinez, 8. Tycho the family dog, right, discovered the flightless raptor.
Tycho, bottom, looks with curiosity at the flightless owl he discovered in the backyard of his Perry home Saturday morning.

When Tycho, the family dog of the Martinezes of Perry, discovered an owl sitting motionless at the base of a tree in the backyard of the family home in the 1600 block of W. Second Street Saturday morning, his owners took action.

“I called the police,” said Carol Martinez, “because we didn’t want Tycho to get him or any of the neighborhood cats.”

Assisting in the rescue were Carol’s husband, Edis Martinez, and their two sons, Jordan, 9, and Dyland, 8. Tycho seemed relieved.

Officers of the Perry Police Department responded and transported the owl to a place of natural safety outside the city limits of Perry.

  1. Please also contact Iowa Bird Rehabilitation for situations like this. Their telephone number is 415-596-1147 and website is https://www.iowabirdrehab.org/. In the case of a raptor like this owl, please also try to contact SOAR at 712-830-6116 and their website is https://soarraptors.org/i-found-an-injured-raptor/ That owl looked like a juvenile and should have been checked out by a wildlife rehabilitator before being released. Perhaps the Perry Police could call one of the groups I’ve listed to let them know about the owl and its condition?
