Perry Volunteer Fire Department Chief Chris Hinds was honored as the 2016 Perry Civil Servant of the Year Monday by the Perry Rotary Club.

Hinds was presented with a plaque by Rotary Club President Quinn Adair during the open forum portion of Monday night’s Perry City Council meeting. Adair thanked Hinds on behalf of the Rotarians and the community as a whole for his commitment to the safety of residents.

“The amount of time Chris continues to give to our community is remarkable and commendable,” Adair said. “He is perpetually involving his department and himself in the community through education and training in fire safety.”

Hinds has been a Perry firefighter for many years and the chief of the department since 2006.

“It’s very humbling to receive something like this,” Hinds said in accepting the award, his voice choked with emotion. “I’ve been a lifelong resident of this community and think a lot of it. I try to do the best I can for my community.”

Hinds thanked the city council and the city administrative staff for their support.

“And I guess I need to thank the firefighters,” he said, “because if it wasn’t for them doing the day-to-day hard work that’s involved in keeping the place going, I wouldn’t get a lot of it done. So thank you.”

Hinds was roundly applauded when presented with the award and at the conclusion of his remarks.
