First light snow brings slick roads, advice to slow down

Morning motorists should be away that roads are slick after the season’s first snow, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

In a statement issued Sunday morning, the NWS noted the first appreciable snowfall of the season accumulated over night on many roads from Audubon and Carroll northward and eastward toward Forest City, Webster City, Ames and Tama.

Many roads in these areas will remain snow or slush covered, with slick conditions into the early morning hours as snow persists, the NWS said. An inch or two may accumulate by daybreak, particularly on vegetation, where less melting occurs.

The NWS statement said farther south along the Interstate 80 corridor, including the Perry area, snow was beginning to increase about 3 a.m.

Although snow amounts in the Perry area are expected to be one inch or less, the snow could potentially combine with cooling road temperatures to produce similarly snow- and slush-covered roads toward daybreak, the NWS said.

Motorists are urged to slow down, drive defensively and exercise caution early Sunday because many of their fellow motorists will be unaccustomed to winter driving conditions.
