The National Weather Srervice (NWS) office in Des Moines has issued a flash flood watch for much of central Iowa from 4 p.m. Friday until 10 a.m. Saturday.
The flash flood watch covers Dallas County and the following Iowa counties: Adair, Adams, Audubon, Black Hawk, Boone, Bremer, Calhoun, Carroll, Cass, Greene, Grundy, Guthrie, Hamilton, Hardin, Jasper, Madison Marshall, Polk, Sac, Story, Tama, Taylor, Union, Warren and Webster.
Thunderstorms are expected to move into the watch area Friday afternoon and into Friday night, with widespread rain totals of about one inch, with locally higher amounts expected by Saturday morning.
Locally heavy rain can lead to flash flooding, with water-covered roads and significant urban flooding. Be especially careful for water over the roads and flash flooding at night.
Smaller streams might quickly rise and may cause new river flooding in the coming days.
The NWS advises travelers and residents in the flash flood watch are to monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action if flash flood warnings are issued.
