Fred “Don” Bailey Jr., 82, of Perry passed away Saturday, March 3, 2018, at the Dallas County Hospital in Perry, Iowa.

According to his wish, Don was cremated, and a celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Fred “Don” Donald Bailey Jr. was born Nov. 22, 1935, in Perry, Iowa, to Fred Donald and Viola Irene (Miller) Bailey Sr.

He attended Perry High School, graduating with the class of 1956.

He was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Hogbin at Ferndale, Mich., March 23, 1957.

He worked for the Perry Police Department, the Dallas County Sheriff’s office, the Milwaukee Railroad Detective and lastly at the Woodward State Hospital.

He was a member of the American Legion, the Iowa Softball of Hall Fame and the Des Moines Softball Hall of Fame. He was a Cubs Fan, watching the Iowa Hawkeye’s.

Don was accomplished in bowling, with three 300 games and an over-800 series.

He was a pitcher for softball, loved spending time with his grandchildren, going to the casino, working in his yard and always made sure his family was cared for.

In death he rejoins his parents, Fred and Viola Bailey; and siblings, Larry Bailey, Jerry Bailey and Judy Lawrence.

Left to cherish Don’s memory are his wife, Shirley Ann Bailey, of Perry; children, Candace (David) Holcomb of Bagley, Dawn Bailey of Perry and Steve (Angie) Bailey of Perry; daughter-in-law, Robyn Spence of Grimes; grandchildren, Travis (Bethany) Spence of Perry, Nicole Spence of Perry, Joshua Williams of Grimes and Ron and Ashly Landals of Perry; step-granddaughter, Kassie (Austin) Munoz of Ankeny; great-grandchildren, Caleb Spence and Daxton Spence of Perry, Cameron and Caiden Spence of Perry and Peyton Landals of Perry; step-great grandchildren, Audi, Declan and Ellington Munoz of Ankeny; siblings, Richard (Deb) Bailey of Libertyville, Ill., and Jackie (Duane) Cannon of Afton, Iowa.

  1. I’m so sorry for your loss. I always had a good time bowling with him at Perry Bowl. He always gave me a lot of crap since I was 16 years old (long time ago).

  2. My condolences and thoughts and prayers to the family of Don Bailey. As you know, I knew him well, and all of you guys are like a second family to me. Praying for peace, happiness and great blessings going forward. We all who knew him will miss him greatly and enjoy fond and happy memories. God bless you.
