The National Weather Service office in Johnston has issued a freeze warning from 1-8 a.m. Tuesday, April 26, with sub-freezing temperatures expected to drop as low as 26 to 31 degrees.

Frost and freeze conditions will damage or kill sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing across much of central Iowa, the NWS said.

Garners should take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold, the NWS said.

In order to prevent the freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes, they should
be wrapped, drained or allowed to drip slowly. In-ground sprinkler systems should be drained, and above-ground pipes should be covered in order to protect them from freezing.
