Gerald “Gary” Hawthorne, 75, of Perry passed away Friday, May 19, 2017, at the Perry Lutheran Home in Perry, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held Monday, May 22 at 10:30 a.m. at the Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Perry. Visitation will be Sunday, May 21 from 4-6 p.m. at the Carris Family Funeral Home in Perry.

Memorials will be given to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Perry Lions Club and may be left at the Carris Family Funeral Home. Online condolences may be sent at www.carrisfuneralhome.com.

Gerald “Gary” Leroy Hawthorne was born June 23, 1941, in Corning, Iowa, to Clifford Leroy and Emma (Nafke) Hawthorne.

He graduated from Lohrville High School, attended Northwest Missouri State and later obtained his Master’s degree from University of Montana in Missoula, Montana.

He was united in marriage to Janet Kay Miller at Farnhamville, Iowa, Sept. 3, 1960.

He taught in the Lake City, Clear Lake and Perry Community School Districts.

Gary was a member of the Mount Olivet Lutheran Church and Perry Lions Club.

He enjoyed camping, especially in Colorado, carving, coaching, officiating and was a proud blood donor.

He was his granddaughters’ number one fan at their sports activities.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Emma Hawthorne.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Kay Hawthorne; children, Debra (Chuck) Heuser of Colorado Springs, Colo., Patsy (Don) Riley of Ankeny and Amy (Tom Kaipust) Hawthorne of Omaha, Neb.; granddaughters, Katie (fiancé Kyle Walker) Riley, Samantha (fiancé Ben Smith) Riley and Maggie (Drew) Lindaman. His siblings include three brothers, Merrill (Rita) Hawthorne of Lohrville, Ron (Leaetta) Hawthorne of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and Darrell (Jan) Hawthorne of Lohrville.
