A stray German shepherd was taken into custody Wednesday by the Perry Police Department after apparently sleeping rough for some time. The dog’s owner is sought.

A caller to the Perry Police Department Tuesday reported seeing the dog “at the rear fire exit on some wooden stairs” at the Perry Hy-Vee. The dog “has been there since yesterday,” the caller said.

An officer responded but “was unable to get close to the dog.”

On Wedbnesday a caller said “the German shepherd is back at Hy-Vee, and this time it looks like it may be hurt.” The caller said the “dog is having trouble lifting one of its back legs.”

Officers responded and this time “were able to capture the dog, which seemed like it had been surviving outside for a while and was not at all friendly.” The officers transported the animal to the Perry Animal Holding Facility and left a message for “the animal shelter with a warning about the dog’s aggressive behavior.”

Anyone with information about the stray German shepherd is asked to call the Perry Animal Holding Facility at 515-465-4092.
