Thursday, Nov 17 is the date of the 2016 Great American Smokeout.

Smokers across the nation take part in the annual American Cancer Society Great American Smokeout on the third Thursday of November each year. In 2016 the date is Nov. 17.

Even if you miss this particular day, encourage someone you know to quit smoking for one day and make a plan to quit for good. By quitting – even for one day – smokers take an important step toward a healthier life and reducing their disease risk.

Smokers need family and friends’ support and encouragement.

Quitting smoking has immediate and long-term benefits at any age. In addition to improved health, there are many other positive reasons to quit:

  • Food tastes better
  • Breath, clothes, and hair smell better
  • Healthier kids and pets
  • Save money
  • Whiter teeth
  • Cheaper insurance

Ready to quit? Here are some quick tips.

  • Set a firm quit date.
  • Throw away all tobacco products, including electronic smoking devices.
  • Take a pledge to have a tobacco-free home and/or vehicle.
  • Set up a good support system.
  • Practice deep breathing.
  • Plan activities you will do when you have a strong urge to use tobacco products.
  • Electronic Smoking Devices are not an FDA approved smoking cessation aid.

  1. There’s a good thing when you stop smoking, and there’s also a bad thing. The good thing is food tastes better. The bad thing is food tastes better.
