A visitation will be held Monday, Jan. 8, with the family receiving friends 5–7 p.m. at Murdock Funeral Home for Hazel L. Schuhardt, 79, of Perry. A prayer service will be held following the visitation at 7 p.m.

Hazel passed away Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of 79.

Hazel Lorene Hicks was born July 23, 1938, the daughter of George and Lucile (Cole) Hicks in Dallas County/Washington Township near the town of Minburn, Iowa.

Growing up, she attended Gardiner School. Her whole life was spent in the Minburn and Perry area.

Hazel married William H. Schuhardt Jan. 22, 1954, at the First United Methodist Church in Perry.

For nearly 20 years she worked as a school cook in the Perry school system before she retired.

Hazel liked the outdoors, helping Bill farm, gardening, mushroom hunting and fishing. She even tried her luck at deep sea fishing and caught the prize fish of the day. Floating on a canoe down the river, motorcycle rides and a Sunday drive in the car were also favorites.

She enjoyed trips across the country with her family and many other trips with good friends over the years. A dream vacation to Hawaii in 1989 topped the list.

On recent Sundays she enjoyed Face Time with her daughter, Cindy, while they played cribbage.

Survivors include her son, Doug Schuhardt of Perry; daughter, Cindy (David) Cole of Libby, Mont.; two grandsons, Jason (Torey) McElroy of Perry and Jarin McElroy of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and one sister, Sandra Garnes of Perry.

Preceding Hazel in death were her parents; husband on Dec. 14, 2016; one brother, Ronnie Hicks; and one sister, June Goldsberry.

Memorials may be directed to the Friends of the Perry Public Library in Hazel’s name and may be left or sent to the funeral home. Online condolences may be left at murdock funeralhome.net
