Every day, 10,000 people in the U.S. celebrate their 65th birthday. Many of these seniors are in need of social service programs to enhance their quality of life. However, despite the increased need for support, only 2 percent of funding from the nation’s largest grant makers is specifically focused on seniors.

Most people are unaware of the daily challenges — physical, financial, emotional — faced by seniors and the disabled. In many cases, just a little bit of help can make a world of difference. We want to shine a light on this issue in the hope of engaging our community in helping us ease the burdens that many seniors face at a time when they should be enjoying life to the fullest.

On Nov. 27 HomeCare Services Inc. of Dallas County will participate in #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving. #GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

The global #GivingTuesday kicks off the holiday giving season and inspires people to give back in impactful ways to the nonprofits and causes they support.

HomeCare Services Inc. of Dallas County is partnering with GIVE65, a program of Home Instead Senior Care Foundation and the first crowd-fundraising platform exclusively devoted to helping nonprofits raise money online for programs and services that create hope for seniors.

To multiply the spirit of giving, $50,000 raised on GIVE65.org will be matched dollar for dollar up to $5,000 per organization. We have the potential to double our fundraising efforts up to $5,000, but only while matching funds are still available, so donate early!

Giving starts at 12 a.m. Central Standard Time Tuesday, Nov. 27, at HomeCare Services GIVE65 website, and it concludes at 12 a.m. Central Standard Time Wednesday, Nov. 28.

Through GIVE65, donations will help HomeCare Services provide affordable in-home services to local elderly and disabled individuals. Without this financial assistance, some of the most vulnerable among us might otherwise go without the care they need to keep them living safe and independently in their own homes.

“Every gift makes a difference,” said Roger H. Baumgart, executive director of the Home Instead Senior Care Foundation. “From $10 to $1,000 — and the best part is these funds will help at the local, grassroots level. We are pleased to partner with HomeCare Services Inc. of Dallas County because they are an outstanding example of the efforts being done to make a positive difference for the safety, well-being and independence of seniors, especially seniors most in need of our help and support.”
