Feline residents of the Humane Society of Perry’s Cattery are looking to relocate to different quarters.

The Humane Society of Perry needs to relocate the Cattery, the society’s state-licensed cat shelter that occupies a corner of the old F. K. Stokely Lumber Co. barn standing between W. Second and McColl streets in downtown Perry.

Through the generosity of the animal-loving Stokely family of Perry, the Humane Society has operated its cattery rent-free in the 917-square-foot lean-to portion of the building since shortly after the lumber business relocated to the East Perry Plaza in 2007.

The Cattery houses between 20 and 30 cats at a time, depending on the time of year, according to Humane Society of Perry volunteer Iris Coffin. It was licensed as an animal shelter by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship Animal Industry Bureau in 2015.

“We are looking for a place that is approximately 500 to 700 square feet,” Coffin said. “It can’t have carpeting due to state regulations. It will need to be inspected by the state to determine that it adheres to our license.”

She said the Humane Society of Perry expects to occupy the new space for about two years. Rent is negotiable. Anyone with suggestions for prospective space for a new Cattery is asked to call 515-238-0404.

The former lumber yard structure was built in 1900, accordng to county records. It was bought from the Stokelys in January 2017 by Curt and Connie Bronnenberg of rural Perry, owners of the Spring Valley Honey Farms.
