HUP names Paul Burrow Citizen of the Year 2020

The Hispanics United for Perry (HUP) civic organization presented their Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award for 2020 Tuesday to the Rev. Paul Burrow of Indianola and formerly of Perry.

Burrow recently retired after serving for 10 years the United Methodist Church congregations in Perry, Rippey, Minburn and the Fairview Church. He and his wife, Nancy Borrow, are also celebrating 41 years of marriage Tuesday, Sept. 8.

The HUP Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award is normally presented in a ceremony during the annual ¡Viva Perry! Latino Festival. This year’s festival has been moved online and will be hosted on the Hispanics United for Perry (HUP) Facebook page and the  the Perry Public Library Facebook page Saturday, Sept. 19.

The virtual ¡Viva Perry! Latino Festival will feature a slide show of previous festivals, some interviews with families about why they live in Perry, interviews with vendors about why they like the Latino Festival, a family making a pinata, a Latino cooking session, a class of kids playing the Latino game “Lotteria” and local Latino dancers from Perry.

The 2020 award was presented to Burrow in a brief ceremony Tuesday morning at the Raccoon Valley Bank in Perry. Presenting the honorary plaque was HUP Secretary Marilyn Herrick. She was joined by HUP Treasurer Danelle McDowell, HUP Board member Yesica Mena and HUP members Sofia De Soto, Irene Alfara Paul Herrick.
