Iona Thornburg, 100, of Perry passed away Monday, Oct. 17, 2022, at the Eden Acres Campus of the Perry Lutheran Homes in Perry, Iowa.
A private family graveside service will be held in the Peoples Cemetery. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
Iona Marie Thornburg was born Aug. 9, 1922, in Perry, Iowa, to Louis and Ella (Friedrichsen) Kuhlman.
She attended country school and then graduated from the Bouton Community School.
Iona was united in marriage to Marion “Bud” Louis Thornburg at the St. Paul Lutheran Church on June 2, 1946.
She farmed with Bud on their Century Farm.
Iona was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church and was very active in the Bouton community, including working at the Bouton Breakfasts and serving her church.
She loved playing cards, puzzles and dancing at Lake Robbins Ballroom.
Iona always had time for her “pride and joy,” her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Holidays and BBQs at the farm and yearly vacations to Clear Lake made special memories for everyone.
In death she rejoins her husband, Bud; and her parents, Louis and Ella Kuhlman.
Left to cherish Iona’s memory are her sons, Jerald (Kathy) Thornburg of Perry and David (Rhonda) Thornburg of Bouton; grandchildren, Janelle (Jeremy) Whelchel of Perry, Jill (A.J.) Ketelesen of Perry, Ryan Thornburg of Bouton and Brandi (Kevin) Robinson of Woodward; great grandchildren, Katelyn Whelchel, Karley Jensen, Kamryn Whelchel, Karagyn Whelchel, Kalley Whelchel, Jayse Whelchel, Kaylee Brock, Khloe Brock, Cameron Ketelsen, Hope Thornburg, Brooke O’Dell, Brandon Jacobs, Bryant Jacobs, Kylie Robinson, Kolton Robinson and Caysen Robinson.
