The grand concourse at the Iowa State Fair will be silent this year because the fair board has cancelled the fair because of the COVID-19.

Eating is one of the chief pleasures at the Iowa State Fair.

Putting an end to months of suspense, the Iowa State Fair Board voted Wednesday to cancel this year’s fair.

Iowa State Fair Board President Dave Hoffman said the decision was made out of an abundance of caution for public safety in the face of the novel coronavirus global pandemic.

Offering a glimmer of hope to Iowa’s young livestock breeders, the fair board voted to explore the possibility of 4-H and FFA livestock shows in August.

The financial viability of this year’s fair was also doubtful. The Iowa State Fair was scheduled for Aug. 13-23.
