Jefferson Police Report Feb. 17-19

February 17, 2017

  • A traffic stop was performed in the 700 block of N. Elm Street, which resulted in Jake Ball of Jefferson being issued a citation for excessive speed.
  • Dusty Seiberling reported a burglary to his vehicle Feb. 15 while it was parked in the 100 block of W. Lincoln Way. A pair of sunglasses valued at $500 were taken from the unlocked vehicle. An officer is investigating.
  • The Jefferson Police Department’s Chief Mark A. Clouse received a complaint from a minor who witnessed the activation of a flashing blue vehicle light in the Hy-Vee parking lot Feb. 15. An officer is investigating.
  • Jerry Kennedy reported a suspicious vehicle driven by his residence in Jefferson. Kennedy wanted the Police Department to be aware of the situation.
  • An anonymous male caller reported a white or tan truck stuck in the mud in the area below the overpass in the 700 block of N. Elm Street. Upon arrival the officer identified the driver as Andrew Krieger of Jefferson. He reported pulling off to the side of a concrete parking lot. While doing so, his tire became stuck in the mud on the side of the lot. Another vehicle assisted in pulling the vehicle free. No damage appeared to have been caused by the incident.
  • Casey’s General Store at 508 N. Elm St. in Jefferson reported a gas drive off in the amount of $35. As an officer investigated, the driver, Steven Scheffler, returned and paid for the fuel. The drive off is believed to have been accidental.
  • Brenda Batschelet of Jefferson reported two males outside a residence in the area of Adams and Oak streets. She said one of the males yelled profanities at her as she rode her bicycle westbound on Adams Street. The officer responded to the area but did not locate anyone who admitted involvement.
  • A minor male and female reported a fight occurring in the roadway involving several males near the intersection of State and Oak streets. Upon arrival an officer found no fight occurring. The officer located several individuals suspected of involvement in the course of the investigation. No one is believed to have been injured. The officer is investigating.
  • An anonymous female contacted the Jefferson Police Department and reported the sound of drums being played loudly in the 600 block of S. Cedar Street and disturbing the peace. An officer responded and followed the sound to 601 S. Cedar St. The officer spoke to Hank Muzney Jr. of Jefferson and warned him. Muzney said he would keep the garage door closed when playing loudly.
  • Jennifer Guerrero of Jefferson called the Jefferson Police Department to report vehicles blocking an alley parallel to W. State Street near Walnut Street. An officer spoke with Amy Baugh of Jefferson, who was moving a few items out of a garage. The vehicle was moved from the alley.
  • A minor male reported issues with the lights for basketball court at Russell Park in Jefferson not working properly. The officer contacted a worker with the Jefferson Parks Department, but he was unable to fix the lights.
  • A traffic stop was performed at the intersection of Elm and Washington streets, which resulted in Raquel Strennen of Jefferson being issued a citation for careless driving, open container–driver 21 years old and older and driving while license under suspension.

February 18, 2017

  • Patrick Thomas of Jefferson reported an unknown person banging on the sides of a house in the 200 block of S. Cedar Street. An officer patrolled the area and located no one out in the area.
  • Mary Silbaugh of Jefferson reported two bicycles left unattended overnight in Washington Park in Jefferson. An officer responded and found the bicycles had already been removed.
  • Dustin Bushman of Jefferson said Brock Louk of Jefferson was driving past his residence while making an obscene gesture in his direction. Bushman said he wanted this behavior to stop. An officer did not locate Louk in the area. The officer is investigating.
  • Bomgaars at 205 W. McKinley St. contacted the Jefferson Police Department regarding a woman’s wallet located in the store. An officer took possession of the wallet and is investigating.
  • A Jefferson Police Department officer arrested a male in the 800 block of W. Wall Street on active Jefferson Police Department arrest warrants. Ryan James Brown, 44 of Jefferson was charged with assault while participating in a felony, second-degree burglary, willful injury and second-degree criminal mischief. The charges stemmed from a reported assault Feb. 18 in Jefferson.
  • Kum and Go, 303 N. Elm St., reported an unidentified female left the store with four Iowa Lottery tickets valued at $5 each, but she was only charged for two. The female could not be identified. An officer determined it was not an intentional theft because the customer was not charged by the clerk.
  • An anonymous female called the Jefferson Police Department to report a disturbance involving a male yelling at Casa De Oro, 1409 N. Elm St. Upon arrival an officer encountered the male, Jason Cooper, 37, of Jamaica, Iowa, who was outside of the store and waiting with an employee. Cooper was asked to step outside because he was loud and upsetting other customers. Observations made by the office and statements collected at the scene led to the arrest of Cooper for disorderly conduct and public intoxication.
  • HyVee, 106 W. Washington St., reported a theft of alcohol that was observed by staff members. The female suspect left the store prior to an officer’s arrival. Stolen was a 750 milliliter bottle of Malibu rum valued at $14.99. The officer is investigating.
  • Joshua Derry of Jefferson reported a suspicious vehicle parked in the 100 block of E. McKinley Street. An officer located the vehicle and determined the registered owner lived in the area, and the vehicle was not suspicious.
  • An officer assisted The Greene County EMS with a medical call in the 100 block of S. Cedar Street.

February 19, 2017

  • Jamie Ganoe of Jefferson reported a suspicious vehicle at 306 W. Reed Street. The male driver was removing property from the garage. The male claimed they were working for a homeless shelter in the Des Moines Area and removing property for that purpose. The officer did not locate the vehicle and is investigating.
  • Rick Morain of Jefferson reported his wife had been for a walk and lost a brown V-neck sweater. Morain asked to be contacted if it was found or turned in. An officer patrolled the 100 block of S. Maple Street but did not locate the lost item.

*A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
