February 24, 2017

  • An officer removed tree branches from the roadway at Locust and Madison Streets.
  • An officer checked on a business alarm activation at 300 American Drive.
  • Hanna Hunter said her dog was loose, and she was looking for it in the area of 2204 N. Mulberry St.
  • An officer checked on a business alarm activation at 300 American Drive.
  • Mike Wright reported a stalled vehicle on S. Elm Street near the high school. The officer assisted the Des Moines motorist, who had run out of gas.
  • Officers assisted with a medical call in the 100 block of E. Central Avenue.
  • An officer spoke to a private snow removal contractor about depositing snow on the street in the 400 block of N. Locust Street. There were piles of snow deposited onto the street after the city had cleared the street.
  • A caller said a female was standing in the parking lot at 104 N. Elm St. with several suitcases. The officer made contact with the female and learned she was passing through town on her way to Nebraska. A local church was assisting the female.
  • The Nevada Police Department requested assistance from an officer with sending booking photos of a female. The officer was investigating a theft in Nevada.
  • Jessica Peckum said the stop signs at the intersection of Elm Street and Lincoln Way were covered with snow and needed to be cleared. An officer removed the snow pack from the signs.
  • A caller said a back door was open at a residence in the 700 block of W. Madison Street. The officer made contact with a property owner about the incident.
  • Crystal Beyers requested an officer at 203 S. Cedar St. to speak with her unruly juvenile daughter who was not listening to her mother anymore. The officer spoke to the mother and daughter about the importance of respecting and listening to your parents.
  • Officers began a burglary investigation at 1503 N. Elm St. Numerous padlocks had been cut off of storage units. Officers are working to determine who owns the effected units and if items are missing. The investigation continues.
  • Officers removed a tree from the roadway in the 800 block of N. Maple Street.
  • Miranda Wahl reported losing her wallet at the Hy-Vee at 106 W. Washington St. She returned to the store but was unsuccessful in locating it. Store officials located video of a couple who picked up the wallet and removed it from the store. The officer is attempting to contact the couple, who live in Glidden.
  • Officers were advised of two 911 hang-up calls that mapped near Lincoln Way and Locust Street. Officers checked the area but did not locate anything.
  • A traffic stop was performed in the 300 block of W. Sunset Street, resulting in Lynn Wilkerson of Des Moines being issued a citation for operation without registration.

February 25, 2017

  • Officers came upon a vehicle stuck in a snow drift in the 900 block of W. Central Avenue. The officers’ investigation led to the arrest of Jesse Ray Savka, 30, of Carroll for first-offense OWI.
  • Matt Gordon said someone was walking on 220th Street near the Red Wood Motel. He thought the person would get hit by a vehicle. The officer made contact with a female transient trying to get to Carroll. The Greene County Sheriff’s office transported the female to the Carroll County Line, where a Carroll County Deputy Sheriff transported her into town.
  • Officers are investigating a burglary to a residence at 301 Sunset Road. Someone forced the door to the residence open and removed jewelry from inside. The investigation continues.
  • The Carroll Police Department forwarded photos from a theft at the Carroll Walmart, hoping the officer could help identify the three thieves.
  • A traffic stop was performed in the 800 block of W. Lincoln Way, resulting in Katelynn Gifford of Scranton being issued a citation for operation without a valid driver’s license. The vehicle did not have a valid insurance card and no valid driver, so it was towed from the area.
  • Rachel Bettey brought a stray dog to the Law Enforcement Center. The officer returned the animal to the owner and a time period has been provided for the animal to become compliant with city animal licensing.
  • A Greene County Deputy Sheriff requested that a Jefferson Police Department officer look for a male at 305 N. High St. The man was not located by the officer.
  • The Carroll County Sheriff’s office requested an officer go to the parking lot at 777 Wild Rose Lane and look for a vehicle stolen earlier in the day near Coon Rapids. Officers checked the area but did not locate the stolen vehicle.
  • Officers assisted the Greene County EMS with a medical call in the 400 block of N. Chestnut Street.
  • Michael Godwin was out of town and requested an officer check on his residence at 303 S. Grimmell Road. Godwin reported tracks in the snow and lights on at his residence. The officer found the residence secure, with no signs of tracks in the area.
  • A traffic stop was performed at 777 Wild Rose Lane. The officer had pursued the vehicle from the 700 block of N. Elm Street, where the vehicle had been locked on the officer’s radar unit for a speeding violation. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Michael Lee Carlson, 31, of Boone for first-offense OWI, failure to yield to emergency vehicle, open container of alcohol and excessive speed.

February 26, 2017

  • While conducting business checks, an officer located an open door at 610 N. Elm St.
  • An officer located an open door at 1603 N. Elm St.
  • Officers assisted the Greene County EMS with a medical call in the 1000 block of W. Washington Street.
  • Officers assisted the Greene County EMS with a medical call in the 100 block of N. Elm St.
  • Officers took reports of numerous suspicious checks being used at two local businesses. An officer is investigating the event.
  • Tyler Hankel reported criminal mischief occurred to his vehicle parked at 503 Hickory Lane. A rear window, valued at $500, was broken out of Hankel’s 2008 Honda Ridgeline.
  • A traffic stop was performed in the 100 block of W. Lincoln Way, resulting in Ashley Vouge of Jefferson being issued a citation for failure to provide proof of financial liability.
  • An officer was advised of a male in dark clothing walking on 235th Street near the Jefferson Airport. The officer made contact with the man, who was walking from Grand Junction to Jefferson. The officer provided the man a ride to town due to cold temperatures.
  • A traffic stop was performed in the 500 block of N. Wilson Avenue, resulting in Melissa Teeters of Bedford being issued a citation for failure to provide proof of financial liability.
  • A traffic stop was performed in the 1500 block of N. Elm Street with a speeding vehicle. The officer smelled marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. The male driver said there were no narcotics in the vehicle and gave the officer verbal permission to search the vehicle. During the consent search of the vehicle, the officer located suspected marijuana. The driver attempted to throw a smoking device under the vehicle as the officer searched inside. The officer heard the object strike the ground and retrieved it. Logan Wayne Grazier, 21, of Cedar Falls was arrested and charged with possession of controlled substance/marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. After failing Standardized Field Sobriety Testing performed at the Law Enforcement Center, the officer invoked implied consent and requested a urine specimen for testing. Future charges of OWI are pending results of the lab tests.

*A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
