A Celebration of Life service for Karen Sue Garreans was held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16 at Hastings Funeral Home in Perry. Visitation was after 1 p.m. Thursday, with family present from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Pastor David Schroeder of the Abundant Life Ministries in Jefferson provided words of comfort. Honorary bearers were Bob Carhill, Kenny Gustin, Roger Coffin, Jorge Gonzalez and Bill White. Following the services at the funeral home, a luncheon was served at Dave Garrean’s house.

Karen Sue Garreans, daughter of Charles Irwin Kalkas and Hazel Ruth Adams, was born July 29, 1952, in Shenandoah, Iowa, and died Sept. 10, 2016, at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of 64.

Karen graduated from Farragut High School in 1973 and met the love of her life, David LeRoy Garreans. They were united in marriage and had two daughters Sandra and Toby.

Karen worked as a waitress, a Farmaster Gate Manufacturer in Red Oak for D&L Car Seats.

Then the family moved outside of Perry to Angus for the past 27 years.

Karen worked at Tyson, Sunny Fresh Egg Plant, Firestone, was a manager at Sparky’s and in the deli at Walmart in Grimes.

She enjoyed gardening and quilting. Karen loved animals like chickens, dogs, cats, Tina the goat and Woody, her wild duck.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Cody Garreans-Walsh; and brother-in-law, Robert Evans.

She is survived by her husband, David LeRoy Garreans; daughters, Sandra (Jeremy Gohn) Garreans of Perry and Toby (Paul) Bishop of Jefferson; three grandchildren, J. D. (Kiann Wessels) Gonzalez of Ankeny, Samantha (Samuel) Simmons of Carroll and Nikolas Garreans-Walsh of Perry; great-granddaughter, Nichole Simmons of Carroll; brothers, Terry (Darlene) Kalkas of Perry, Ark., and John Kalkas of Shenandoah; sisters, Joan Thuman of Perry, Judy (Lonnie) Longcor of Oakland, Becky Evans of Nashville, Tenn., and Pat (Les) Buffington of Shenandoah; nieces; nephews; other relatives; and many friends.
