To the editor:

As the nation commemorates Flag Day on June 14, citizens and organizations across the country are joining hands to honor the symbolism of the U.S. flag.

I’m grateful to the members of the Lions Club and Optimist Club, which collaborate to place flags around town each year in the Flags over Perry program. In addition to placing flags on Memorial Day, Labor Day, July Fourth and Veterans Day, they also do so on Flag Day to help highlight the values that the flag represents and emphasize the importance of unity, patriotism and community service.

The U.S. flag is a symbol of the nation’s enduring spirit of liberty and justice for all. It has long been a beacon of hope, representing the ideals of freedom, democracy and equality all over the world.

Each element of the U.S. flag holds significant meaning: the stars symbolize the states of the Union, and the stripes signify the original 13 colonies that paved the way for the birth of a great nation.

The Lions Club and Optimist Club help remind citizens of the emblem’s power and inspire them to uphold the values it embodies. Please consider joining this effort by applying to the Flags over Perry program.

For only $30 they will place a flag holder in a location of your choosing and raise the flag at your home or business five times a year. Normally, the flag will be placed a day or so before the holiday and picked up a day or two later.

Let’s fill Perry with U.S. flags at our upcoming celebration of our nation’s birth on July Fourth!

You can obtain an application in person at Eye Care Associates at 1313 Second St. in Perry or at the DMACC VanKirk Career Academy at 1011 Second St. in Perry. You can also email perrycenter@dmacc.edu to receive an application via email.
