Renowned tuba virtuoso William Bell, buried in Violet Hill Cemetery next to his sister, Ruth Rankin, was honored in November 2017 at the 39th annual William Bell Memorial Tuba Concert.

To the editor:

Thank you for your past support of the Perry Fine Arts concert series. We feel it is safe to re-start our concerts. Our facilities are large enough to allow for social distancing, and masks are always welcome.

Our first concert will be the William Bell Memorial concert on Nov. 6. The concert is at 4 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church at Third and Willis in Perry. Anyone wanting to participate in the concert should bring their instrument and music stand to the church by 1 p.m. for rehearsal and instruction by the clinician.

Our second concert will be the New Horizons Band on Sunday Dec. 12 at 2:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at 1200 18th St. in Perry. A quote from their Facebook page says, ”We are a dedicated and enthusiastic group of seniors that enjoy getting together and making music. We present concerts in our community at such places as retirement homes, nursing homes, city malls and various other places as opportunities arise.”

In past years, we have had a program for students in the elementary school to promote fine arts. This year we are planning to have the Educational Division of the Des Moines Metro Opera in town to perform “Rusalka: The Littlest Mermaid” for the third and fourth graders, with a workshop to introduce them to opera. The evening performance will be “Beauty and the Beast” and is open to the public. The target date is Friday, April 8, 2022.

We are still working on the rest of the season.

We depend on our regular contributors to keep our series solvent. We encourage you to make a contribution, and we will list your name in each program. Our contribution categories are: $40 to $74 for Patrons; $75 TO $99 for Patrons Plus; and $100 or more for Angels. Send your checks to Perry Fine Arts, P.O. Box 237, Perry, IA 50220-0237.

For more information, contact Mark Golightly, treasurer of the Fine Arts Committee, at 515-473-8482.

The Fine Arts Committee members are Marilyn Bode, Randall ”Doc” McCaulley, Mark Golightly, Rev. Andrea Brownlee, Connie Sheehy, Jenn Nelson and Cathy Clark. We are always in need of new members on our committee. If you or anyone you know is interested please contact us.

Thank you for your support, and we look forward to seeing you at the concerts during the upcoming season.

Cathy Clark, chair of the Perry Fine Arts
