To the editor:

After Thursday’s violence at Perry High School, now is the time to discuss the changes that Iowa and the nation need to make:

1.) Bullying needs to be take seriously with consequences for the student and parent with a three-strike rule and then the student either goes to the Woodward Academy, Eldora or a military school to finish their school.

2.) Mental illness needs to be realistically addressed.

3.) Parents need to held responsible for children with weapons. The state needs to pass laws of either serious misdemeanor or Class D felony for parents whose child possesses a weapon.

4.) Schools need one single access-in point, with all other doors having access-out only. All out doors need to be alarmed if open for more than a few seconds.

5.) Multiple cameras in all hallways must be monitored in real time.

I will guarantee you that this will fall out of the headlines rapidly with only one dead and no “assault” weapon.
