Letter to the editor: Reynolds a dog-whistling phony, readers say

To the editor:

Kim Reynolds is a chip off the old Branstad block of benighted arrogance. Her campaign is based on personal attacks, and her narrative of working to balance income and family rings hollow.

Big deal! So did we all! Nothing new here.

Her Democratic opponent, Fred Hubbell, is making the campaign about issues. We’d rather hear about issues:

  • We cannot drink our well water.
  • There are no turtles in the Des Moines River – hardly.
  • The soil is lifeless, and hog stench, not fresh, sweet air, is now the norm for rural Iowa.

Are Iowans so stupid that we will run after the dog whistles of candidates who profess to be sprung of common clay when really they support the ultra wealthy, like D. J. Trump?

Maybe the phrase now should be “Iowa Stupid” and not “Iowa Nice.”

We’d suggest “Iowa Angry.” and let’s collectively get off our duffs and vote in November. We change so-called leaders with our votes, and hopefully we will not resort to bullying with bullets and Alt-Right dogma.

Our parents were young children during World War II, yet memories of their parents’ deep concern about the dictators Hitler and Mussolini were internalized by listening and asking questions.

Of our one remaining parent, the concern about dictators lives on. The wise, 89-year-old senior claims Trump is another Hitler.

Kim Reynolds aligned herself with Trump.

  1. I recently ran for a position in the Iowa House of Representatives. I threw my hat into the ring because every day when I looked at the Iowa Secretary of State web site, I saw no one on the Republican ballot in House District 47. When I turned in my paperwork, I was told I was the third candidate that day. In the primary, I won my county but lost overall. When I was campaigning, I heard from a lot of farmers, even out of my house district, who said they could not trust Hubble for Governor. He didn’t know anything about anything. He said he would listen but knew nothing about the issues. On top of that, he was quoted as saying, “Iowa was not the best state to live in.” I want my governor to be proud of my state. I want my governor to push for rural values and to push for economic development for rural Iowa — not just West Des Moines, Ankeny, even Ames — and give small towns equal opportunities for economic growth. I’m sure his money will carry him into the sunset but wonder if he will ever know anything.
