Letter to the editor: Rise of the anti-safety-net conservatives

To the editor:

Over the past 40 years, I have tried to become an expert on conservative political thought.
I believe it is important to share with your readers the one important finding I have learned.

There now appears to be a much larger number of conservatives who are essentially “survival-of-the-fittest” Social Darwinists than there were during the 1950s through the 1970s.

This means, I believe, that they want to abolish and eliminate all federal government safety-net programs, including Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Food Stamps and College Student Loans.

You will find many of them in the U.S. Congress as members of the House Freedom Caucus, the old Tea Party and the so-called Movement Conservatives.

You will find a heavy dose of such thinking in conservative think tanks, such as Americans For Prosperity, the Heritage Foundation and the Cato Institute.

While some of these groups are open and transparent about their beliefs, many use hidden, stealth tactics to infuence opinion and political decision making.

Others can do the same research I have done and will likely come to the same conclusion.
I highly recommend the books “Dark Money” by Jane Mayer and “Democracy in Chains” by Nancy MacLean.

    • ThePerryNews.com has readers all across the country, Mr. Shawd, many of whom either once lived in the Perry area or have other connections here. We are as happy to receive their letters as we are to receive letters from folks right here in town. ThePerryNews.com is an open forum for ideas, and we will publish letters to the editor regardless either of the content of the ideas or their place of origin. Truth (and garbage) is not exclusive to the Perry area. Thanks for reading ThePerryNews.com!

    • Garbage? Left-winger? You’ve got to be kidding me.
First off, I also post my opinions on forums from far away places when I think necessary. We’re a global village these days, so this particular practice isn’t nearly as unusual as you might think.
As beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so garbage is in the nose of the sniffer. Your implicit assertion is not only subjective but also inflammatory. The purpose of such comments is to elicit an emotional response and shut the door on any kind of rational consideration of the subject at hand. To me, that’s the same kind of “garbage” spewed by FOX and the radio talk jocks.
Left-winger? There is absolutely nothing in the original missive that can even remotely be considered leftist. The social programs alluded to were mostly part of the New Deal, the latter instituted to stall off any real socialist or leftist movement in the nation 80 years ago. Granted, these things represent a position to the left of yours but are in actuality not really leftist at all. I’m quite qualified to make that call as I am a genuine leftist.
If you’d like, you should stop watching FOX for a week or so, and I’d be quite pleased to tell you what a real leftist is and isn’t. You apparently have no clue at all.
