To the editor:

I am a 72-year-old man who already has one foot in the grave, but I am really worried about what the future will be like in our society.

Since 1980 I’ve watched the growth of a cold-hearted, survival-of-the-fittest, social Darwinist mentality among many conservative Republicans in the conservative news media, on conservative talk shows, in conservative think tanks and policy institutes and especially in the U.S. Congress.

More and more of these people want to abolish every single federal government social program that helps the middle classes and lower classes. I don’t think that most Americans are aware of this.

These people are now much more conservative than are our Republican voters.

What also scares the dickens out of me is the growth of an over-the-top and extreme hyper-individualism and libertarianism in which so many of us believe that we have no responsibilities to each other and that we only have a concern with “me-me-me” and what I want to do.

And we smugly and defiantly call this selfish and self-absorbed narcissism “personal choice.”

  1. Well, sir, I was a registered Democrat until 2006 and now register as an Independent. What we have running our country now is a complete joke. The southern border is a sieve with quadruple the number of illegals coming in that came in under Trump. The bass ackwards pullout of Kabul, leaving hundreds if not thousands of Americans and allies behind, was shameful, and inflation is at a 40-year high. Gasoline was a $1.84 here after the 2000 election, and now it’s $3.34, and my monthly heating bill has nearly doubled from last year. The Republicans have their share of faults, but nothing that compares to the clown in the White House now and the other losers in the House and Senate.

  2. Chiri, the administration isn’t in charge of oil production. The inflation isn’t nearly as bad as it was during the Nixon administration, and Afghanistan was a disaster before so much as one American boot touched the ground. Vietnam crumbled the same exact way. When corrupt governments have to be propped up by the American military to exist, they crumble without the latter. It happens almost every time. Bear in mind we still have troops in South Korea. Also, nothing can get done on Capital Hill when all the GOP wants to do is defend government programs to lower taxes for the rich. Is Biden perfect? Heck no. I haven’t approved much of any administration in most of my adult life. What I do know is it was the New Deal along with winning WW2 that made this country great. Now the New Deal is basically relegated to history, and we have at least 30% of the electorate in love with a petulant fascist. Still and all, I agree with Mr. Epstein in spades.

  3. Sir, you have hit it right on the head. I too am a 77-year-old man, just waiting for my lord to call me home. Like you, I see nothing but a group of people who only want things for themselves, and don’t ask them to do anything for those follow Americans, because they don’t have the time or the desire to. But I do see small groups of younger people who do care, and I hope these folks fare well.

  4. The good character of G. A. Chiri is not being questioned or insulted in any way. We merely have trouble with his thinking. We’re neither threatening nor denying him his right to express his opinions. That his comments are welcomed and posted here attests to our respect for the man though we certainly disagree with him.
