Letter to the editor: Strong PHS soccer program deserves support

Success is no stranger to the Perry High School boys and girls soccer programs, with the 2018 Bluejay state tourney qualifier shown above. Maintaining that success will depend largely on a strong foundation in youth soccer.

To the editor:

I liked your article about the varsity sports!

Being raised in Perry, I really hope that all sports really pick up the pace. It’s good for the students and good for the city.

I guess my concern is that soccer is the sport we are good at year after year. Just last year, we won conference but got eliminated by the eventual state champions, Lewis Central, in a close game 1-0. Not to mention that our varsity starters are made up mostly of upcoming seniors.

But I guess it’s whatever sells more. I just wish the city of Perry would support soccer more, a sport we are actually good at!

  1. Thank you, Abraham, for the letter. As you will recall from when you were a student, I have always supported the Bluejay and Jayette soccer teams. The Perry soccer teams should be proud of their achievements. Since ThePerryNews.com began publishing in Feb. of 2015 we have not missed reporting a single match — not one. Sometimes we are present, sometimes not, but each match is reported on. Season previews and wrap ups, including individual honors, are also offered. The same holds true for swimming, wrestling, track, cross country and golf. We have not missed an event — not one. Keep reading the series and I think you will find your concerns addressed. — Jeff Webster, Sports Editor
