The man convicted last month on three counts of first-degree murder in the October 2016 deaths of three Perry residents was sentenced Friday to three consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole.
Carlos Marlo Hernandez-Ventura, 25, received the maximum sentence under Iowa law after using a machete to brutally murder Lourdes Flor De Leake, 34, her daughter, Melany Elizabeth Barraza, 14, and a kindly old man, Juan Jimenez, 78.
Hernandez-Ventura was convicted of the murders March 21.
Friday’s brief sentencing hearing included consideration of the presentence investigation report and the prosecuting attorneys’ presentation of victim-impact statements.
Following the presentation, which included emotional words from the victims’ families, Judge Paul R. Huscher asked Hernandez-Ventura whether he wished to make a statement.
Speaking through a translator, Hernandez-Ventura indicated he had nothing to say.
After Huscher handed down the sentence, the convict was committed to state prison.
