Madrid Police Report Feb. 5-11

February 5, 2018

  • An officer was dispatched to a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Iowa Highway 210 and Iowa Highway 17. The accident was caused by the heavy snow. Kelly Meeks of Madrid was northbound and turning left onto North Street when the vehicle behind him, which was driven by Richard Sikes of Ankeny and was also northbound, took evasive action and swerved to the left, striking Meek’s vehicle and causing minor damage to both.
  • An officer attended a meeting on the future Public Safety Building with city staff and engineering consultants.
  • An officer received a complaint of a white Dodge truck blocking a business drive on S. Kennedy Avenue. The vehicle was removed before the officer’s arrival.
  • Officers were called to 21st Street and Iowa Highway 17 for a semi-tractor trailer that slid off the roadway. Officers and Madrid Street Department staff assisted the driver with getting the vehicle back on the roadway.
  • An officer assisted a vehicle stuck in the roadway at North Street and Iowa Highway 17. The officer assisted the driver in getting back on the roadway.
  • An officer was dispatched to a minor traffic collision in the 500 block of Gerald Avenue.
  • An officer spoke to a subject regarding possible identity theft.

February 6, 2018

  • An officer received a complaint from a Madrid resident about a neighbor pushing snow onto her property. The officer checked on the complaint and found that snow had been pushed from a business onto the neighbor’s property and had filled in the sidewalk. The officer got a hold of the owner and asked that the snow be removed.
  • An officer performed a vehicle unlock in the 600 block of S. Kennedy Avenue.
  • An officer received a complaint of a swimming pool being a nuisance in the area of 21st and Union streets. The complainant said the pool was left filled and was not used in years. The officer could not locate a pool except at Union and North streets, and it was torn down.
  • An officer was dispatched to a welfare check in the 400 block of Newton Road. Everything checked out okay. A family member was called to stand by with the person.
  • An officer was dispatched to a disturbance in the 800 block of E. Eighth Street. Rosel Mabes of Madrid was subsequently arrested for domestic assault and transported to the Boone County Jail.
  • An officer unlocked a vehicle for an employee at the Madrid Home.
  • An officer was notified of a possible runaway juvenile who left a residence and did not want to return home. The parents were able to locate the juvenile a short time later with a friend and returned home.
  • An officer followed up with a subject regarding a past fraud case.

February 7, 2018

  • An officer was asked by the Madrid Street Department to start marking cars that have not moved from the snowfall and were restricting snow removal from the roadways. Several cars were marked with bright orange warning stickers and will be followed up on tomorrow.
  • An officer initiated a traffic stop at Delander and North streets for a vehicle with expired plates. The driver, Anthony Chiri of Woodward, was issued a citation for driving under suspension and operating a vehicle with expired plates. His father came to the scene and picked him up.
  • An officer assisted with a property retrieval from a residence regarding a past domestic charge.
  • An officer spoke to a juvenile and his mother regarding an assault between juveniles that took place earlier in the day. The officer will follow up with the named juveniles for interviews.
  • An officer received a call from a concerned citizen about a small dog that was left inside a parked vehicle in the cold. The officer made contact with the dog owner, who stopped to visit a friend. The dog owner took the dog inside the residence, and everything checked okay with the animal.
  • An officer was given information regarding the possible whereabouts of a suspect regarding a past report of identity theft from a resident in Madrid. The officer followed up with an out-of-state business to verify. The information will be passed to the local police department and Federal Bureau of Investigation in the suspect’s area for follow up and identification of the suspect.

February 8, 2018

  • Officers were dispatched to a two-vehicle accident on Iowa Highway 17 just south of Iowa Highway 210. Both vehicles were damaged and left inoperable and were towed from the scene. The Iowa State Patrol handled the accident report.
  • An officer met with staff at the Madrid High School and spoke about a case dealing with a student and social media.
  • An officer spoke to Madrid Public Library staff regarding a fight between some young juveniles the night before.
  • An officer spoke with the Madrid Elementary School staff regarding a follow up on a case.
  • An officer performed a vehicle unlock in the 200 block of S. Water Street.
  • An officer was dispatched to Iowa Highway 17 by the Madrid High School for a two-vehicle accident. A vehicle driven by Loren Kane of Des Moines was northbound and signaled to turn into the Cedars when the vehicle behind him, driven by Anthony Ruperto of Des Moines, was following to closely and ran into the rear of kane’s vehicle, which resulted in Kane’s vehicle entering the west ditch. No injuries were reported.

February 9, 2018

  • An officer received a complaint from a Madrid resident who said her neighbor just walked in her house last night without knocking. She wanted the person spoken to about this and informed that he must call before he comes over. A message was passed on to the person, who was told if it happened again, he would be issued a citation for trespassing.
  • An officer received a complaint of two vehicles parked in violation of the snow ordinance. Both vehicles were tagged for removal.
  • An officer responded to the Madrid Home regarding a report of an argument between family members. It was determined that the physical contact between the mother and son was necessary to restrain the combative resident. The officer will follow up with administration on Monday.
  • An officer responded to a business downtown regarding an alarm.
  • An officer responded to W. Eighth Street regarding a report of a domestic assault. It was later determined the complainant denied any physical contact or injury, and the subjects involved were not cohabitating. The male half left for the night.

February 10, 2018

  • An officer stopped a vehicle that was called in as a possible intoxicated driver headed North on Iowa Highway 17 from the Hindu temple. The driver was not intoxicated.
  • An officer issued a warning to someone who was driving a razor ATV on the roadway.

February 11, 2018

  • An officer called to Edgewood Park for a dog running at large. The officer followed the dog home and spoke to the owner in the 400 block of W. Seventh Street.
  • An officer unlocked a vehicle for a resident in the 200 block of S. Green Street.

*A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
