Mary Elizabeth Zmolek, 84, of Boone passed away Feb. 5, 2021, at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 13 at Schroeder-Stark-Wellin Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dan Solomon officiating. A private burial will take place in Linwood Park Cemetery. Face masks and social distancing will be required for those attending the funeral service.

Mary was born Nov. 11, 1936, on a farm outside of Lake Mills, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence and Minnie (Wemken) Johnson.

She attended country school through eighth grade and graduated from Northwood High School.

Mary married Richard Hanson Nov. 12, 1955. They divorced in 1987. Mary and Ray Zmolek were married April 8, 1989.

Ray and Mary made their home in Boone, loving the view of the Boone County Park from their deck and wintering in Arizona for many years.

Mary was a member of the Augustana Lutheran Church.

She was very artistic and loved to sing. Mary also immensely enjoyed her dogs’ companionship over the years.

Mary is survived by her husband, Ray; two sons, David (Cindy Meyer) Hanson of Stanwood, Iowa, and Kevin (Marianne) Hanson of Phoenix; two step-daughters, Jan (Matt) Vellinga of Urbandale and Pam (Randy) Cibula of Marion; grandchildren, Nicholas Hanson, Mitchell (Kate) Hanson, Anthony (Kali Romley) Hanson, Jordan (Connor) McCuen, Derrick (Elizabeth) Cibula, Britni Cibula and Brooke (Tony) Brayton; two great-grandchildren; and her beloved dog, Sweetie.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Charles Johnson and John Johnson; and sister, Phyllis Cook.

Mary’s family would like to thank the staff in the Hearth Stone Memory Care Unit of the Eastern Star Masonic Home for the wonderful care and companionship they gave to Mary this past year.
