Law enforcement detained Scott Michael Greene at 9 a.m. Wednesday morning near Redfield. Greene is a suspect in the ambush killing of two metro police officers Wednesday morning.

The suspect was detained near G Trail and 335th St. southeast of Redfield. Radio reports said Greene was experiencing seizures. Dallas County EMS has been paged to the scene. The vehicle Greene was driving has not been located at this hour.

Perry Police Department Chief Eric Vaughn expressed his sympathy for the slain officers and and his department’s solidarity with the metro law enforcement agencies.

“First and foremost, the thoughts and prayers of the Perry Police Department go out to the families and friends of the officers who have tragically lost their lives,” Vaughn said. “Our thoughts are also with all the members of the Des Moines and Urbandale Police Departments and those agencies assisting in the investigation.”

The officers of the Perry Police Department will continue to perform their duties here as they are called upon like every other day with a heightened sense for their own safety. If called upon to assist with this tragedy we will do so in any way we can.

Des Moines Police Sgt. Paul Parizek said at a morning news conference that a report of shots fired shortly after 1 a.m. Wednesday led to the discovery of an Urbandale Police Department officer found shot in a patrol car near 73rd Street and Aurora Avenue in Urbandale.

About 20 minutes later, a Des Moines Police Department officer was found shot in a patrol car on Merle Hay Road about two miles from the first attack. Both officers have died.

Parizek said there is “clearly danger” right now for metro police officers. Suspects are sought, he said, but there was nothing that authorities were ready to share with the public.

Road blocks have reportedly been erected at 70th Street and Aurora Avenue and on Merle Hay Road in Urbandale.

Urbandale Police spokesman Sgt. Chad Underwood said he believed this is the first Urbandale officer shot in the line of duty.

“I don’t even know where to begin on how bad this year is,” Parizek told reporters during the emotional news conference.

Tragedy struck the Des Moines Police Department in March when Officers Susan Farrell and Carlos Puente-Morales were killed in a traffic accident.
