Motionless, sedentary lifestyle can harm your health

It seems like much of our lives is spent sitting, whether it’s in the car, at our desk or on the couch. All this sedentary, or inactive, time can add up and impact our health.

Sitting for long periods of time is linked to chronic diseases, such as heart disease,  diabetes, and even certain cancers. It can also lead to weight gain and obesity, muscle pain and weakness and mental-health issues.

A sedentary lifestyle can contribute to these health effects because sitting burns few calories, slows our metabolism, reduces blood flow and triggers inflammation in the body.

Therefore, adding more movement and time for standing throughout the day can add up to greatly benefit our health. Consider making simple changes, such as:

  • Taking regular stretch breaks
  • Setting a reminder to get up and move every 30-60 minutes
  • Using a standing desk
  • Limiting your screen time
  • Building movement into your routine like taking a short walk after every meal
  • Tracking your steps with a fitness tracker or phone for extra motivation

Even if we get the recommended 30 minutes of physical activity five days a week, we might still face negative health effects if we spend the rest of the time sitting or lying down. So keep up and moving!
