After almost 18 months at the helm of the Perry Hy-Vee, Matt May will leave Perry at the first of the year for a bigger store in a bigger city.

“I’m being transferred to another Hy-Vee in Madison, Wis.,” May told ThePerryNews.com a few days before Thanksgiving. “It’s sad news but a good opportunity,” he said. The Ankeny native transferred to the Perry store in part to be closer to family.

May’s previous store was in Owatanna, Minn., a town about 180 miles from the Des Moines metro. Madison, Wis., is about 300 miles from Des Moines.

“I won’t start there until Jan. 2,” May said. “I’ll be here for a while to fill the new guy in on what we’re doing.”

The Perry Hy-Vee employs about 150 people. May’s predecessor as store director, Darin Schoop of Granger, was transferred to the Johnston Hy-Vee after a little more than one year at the Perry outlet.

  1. Congratulations to Matt on his new venture. Can’t help but wonder why Perry hasn’t been able to keep a store director for more than a year or so since Denny Glick retired. Can’t remember the number of years he was here, but he always had great ideas for the store and the community. Am also wondering when the Perry Hy-Vee will get the market grille like Jefferson and other communities have. It was announced that we would be getting one over a year ago but nothing since.
