Tom Schleicher, 69, of Bondurant passed away Saturday, April 23, 2016, at the Courtyard Estates at Cedar Point in Pleasant Hill, Iowa.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, April 28 at 10 a.m. at the Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Perry. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 27 from 1-7 p.m., with family present from 4-7 p.m. at the Carris Family Funeral Home in Perry. Burial will be in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Adel.

Memorials will be given to Perry High School or Courtyard Estates-Pleasant Hill and may be left at the Carris Family Funeral Home. Online condolences may be sent at www.carrisfuneralhome.com.

Tom Eugene Schleicher was born Jan. 31, 1947, in Austin, Minn., to Thomas Gifford and Rebecca Mary Bertha (Kraft) Schleicher.

He graduated from Austin High School and then attended four years at Wartburg College, later obtaining his master’s degree in education from Winona State University. He continued his education and obtained his master’s degree in school counseling.

He was united in marriage to Nancy Lee Stevens in Austin, Minn., April 26, 1969.

He started teaching in Tigerton, Wis., and then served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. While in the Navy, he was honored with the Outstanding Recruit Award. After returning from the Navy, he taught at YJB and then came to Perry, retiring in 2005.

Tom was a member of the Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Perry. He was also a member of the Elks Club in Perry, SOAR and the Gamma House Fraternity.

He enjoyed painting rocks, baby sitting his grandchildren, biking, bird watching and going fishing at Lake Washburn in Mimmesota.

Sports were a big part of his teaching career, and he was very active in intramural sports. He was coach of the state 2A boys state basketball champions in 1988 and received many coaching honors in volleyball and basketball, including Wartburg’s Coach of the Year Award.

He also loved watching his grandchildren’s sporting and dancing events.

His favorite professional teams were the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins. His love for sports carried over to the point that owned and operated a baseball and sports memorabilia store.

When playing with the grandkids, he would talk to the cows with them.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Tom is survived by his wife, Nancy Schleicher of Bondurant; daughters, Brenna (Michael) Peel of Ankeny and Brenee (Chris) Herrick of Urbandale; grandchildren, Haylee, Kaylyn, Jacob, Lukas and Ashton; and a sister, Alvis (John) Houston of Rochester, Minn.

  4. Sad I couldn’t come back for the funeral. I will always remember summers hanging out at the card shop in the back room, watching tv and eating pizza! A great God parent. RIP “Uncle” Tom
