Like Daniel in the lion's den, Optimist Club President Jenny Eklund, in red, stands amid a pride of Perry Lions Monday as the two clubs participated in the Flags over Perry program. Lions included, from left, Bob Roeder, Dave Wright, Lions Club President John Andorf, Gary Becker, Charlie Thompson, Allen Becker, Rick Hoesing, Jim McCaulley, Jack Shelker and Lou Hoger.

The Flags over Perry program entered its second year of holidays Monday, with the Perry Lions Club and Optimist Club members raising more than 250 flags on Memorial Day.

Local reaction to the fluttering furlers was positive as usual, with Bob Wilson, executive director of the Perry Chamber of Commerce, exclaiming, “I love the flag. We can never have too many flags.”

For a fee of $25, Perry residents can have the Perry Lions and Perry Optimists plant an American Flag on their property on five federal holidays yearly. Interested residents can fill out an order form or contact Lions Club President Dave Wright at 515-240-7281.

Money raised from the flag project funds Optimist Club scholarships for Perry youth and Lions Club projects such as eyeglasses for the needy, seeing-eye dogs, summer camp for handicapped children and many other worthwhile activities.
