Panthers produce six champions, dominate invitational

TREYNOR — Six Panorama wrestlers won their respective weight class and three others finished as the runner-up in their class as the Panthers cruised to a team title at the Treynor Invitational Saturday.

Danny Nordquist (126 pounds), George Appleseth (132), Noah Kirtley (145), Tyler Van Houten (152) Gunnar Grunsted (160) and Brady Howard (220) each finished atop the awards podium, with Trevor Carey (182), Dalton Holmes (195) and Dan Jensen (285) finishing in second place while Jacob Holwegner (138) placed fourth. Panorama did not have entrants at 106, 113, 120 or 170 pounds.

Panorama scored 228.5 points to easily top Treynor (143) for team honors. Southwest Iowa was third with 128 points and Exira-Elk Horn/Kimballton fourth at 116, with AHSTW (91), St. Albert (86), Red Oak (81), Griswold (75), East Mills (57.5) and West Harrison (19) completing the 10-team field.

Nordquist scored a technical fall (17-1, 5:11) against Daniel Vanatta (SWI) before pinning John Seyler (GRS) in 3 minutes, 16 seconds to win his title, with Appleseth pinning Seth Noel (SA) in 43 seconds and Mister McNaughton (SWI) in 2:28 for first place at 132, while Kirtley pinned Burce Lukehart (RO) in 42 seconds and scored a 5-1 decision in the finals to place first at 145.

Van Houten was first at 152 after pinning Christian Hernandez (SWI) in 44 seconds and Mason Rasmusen (E-EHK) in 58 ticks while Grunsted pinned Mike Noel (RO) in 37 seconds and Nolan Hansen (EM) in 3:35 before scoring a 3-1 win over Cole Bruns (E-EHK) to win the 160 pound title.

The final Panther title came at 220 when Howard pinned Garrett Pryor (TRN) in 1:09 and Liam Mahoney (RO) in 1:07 before edging Nick Freund (GRS), 5-2, and pinning Brennon Mauer (TRN) in 23 seconds.

Carey (182 pounds) scored a 6-5 win over Chris Darnold (EM) and pinned Joe Kenkel (AHSTW) in 5:45 before losing by fall to Sam Gregory (TRN) in the 38 seconds in the finals.

Holmes (195) used a 6-0 win over Jackson Welter (RO) and a pin of Leland Barr (AHSTW) in 33 seconds to reach the finals, where he dropped a tough 3-2 tiebreaker to Elijah Finn (SA) to place second.

Also second was Jensen (285). He pinned Harley Carberry (TRN) in 17 seconds and Aaron Allen (E-EHK) in 1:59 before losing by fall to Thomas Wilson (SWI) in the finals in 72 seconds.

The remaining 11 team points came from Holwegner at 138. He recovered from a loss by fall (in 1:33) to Chase Reber (TRN) by pinning James Young (TRN) in 40 seconds and scoring a 9-5 decision against Emry Colby (PAN) to reach the 3rd place match, where he dropped a 10-1 major decision to Derek Mueller (GRS) to place fourth.

Several Panthers competed at the junior varsity level, with Kaleb Stogdill second at 145, Dalton Bennett third at 285, Preston Prince fifth at 138 and Emry Colby sixth at 138. Ondrej Komora (160) and Nicholas Claibourn (220) were also in action but were unable to record a win.

Panorama returns to action Thursday with a trip to Van Meter Thursday and a rare Friday night competition at Central Decatur.
