Perry Optimists, from left, Ned Menke, Jim Caufield, Courtney Straker, Sven Peterson, Trace Schmitt and Clark Wicks, pleased the people at Principal Park with peanuts, beer and ice cream Friday night.

The Perry chapter of the Optimist Club International took its fundraising efforts to Principal Park in Des Moines Friday and Saturday evenings, staffing several concession stands during the first two of an eight-game home stand for the Iowa Cubs.

Although the home team was roundly pounded Friday by the Nashville Sounds — the ICubs lost 12-3 — losing did not dampen the spirits or slake the thirsts of the 11,987 fans who braved the 80-degree temperatures at game time.

The Optimists were represented Friday by members from the public sphere, including incoming Perry Community School District Superintendent Clark Wicks, Perry Elementary School Principal Ned Menke and Perry City Administrator Sven Peterson, and private-sphere figures Courtney Straker and Trace Schmitt of Great Western Bank and Jim Caufield of ThePerryNews.com.

Saturday’s results were better for the ICubs as they bested the Sounds 5-1. Concession sales again were brisk, handled by Optimists Menke and outgoing Perry Elementary School Co-Principal Joel Martin, Dr. Randy McCaulley and Marsha McCaulley.

Proceeds from the concessionaires supports the Optimist Club’s youth-centered activities in Perry.

A shy smile flits across the face of one of the countless teen fans, left, who sought an autograph from Perry City Administrator Sven Peterson, whose charms melted many tween Dippin’ Dots at Principal Park.
