One man was arrested and another fled the scene of a midnight fight outside the Perry Area Christian Events (PACE) venue at 1000 26th St., according to a statement issued Monday morning by the Perry Police Department.

Douglas Rivas-Melendez, 25, of Perry faces charges of first-offense public intoxication, disorderly conduct and interference with official acts causing injury in the incident, which was reported to police at 11:43 p.m. Sunday

When Rivas-Melendez “became resistant towards officers,” a “Taser was deployed by the officers, and the subject was taken into custody,” said Perry Police Detective Sgt. Jerome Hill.

Rivas-Melendez was then taken to the Dallas County Hospital “to be checked for minor injuries that were sustained during the initial fight,” Hill said. He said Perry Police Department officers also sustained minor injuries while taking the suspect into custody.

Rivas-Melendez is currently held in the Dallas County Jail in lieu of $2,000 bond.

Initial reports said a number of people were involved in the melee, but further investigation revealed the fight was between Rivas-Melendez and a second, unidentified person who escaped.

“Upon separating the male subjects,” Hill said, “it was discovered that one of the subjects involved in the altercation had already fled the scene.” He said “the incident is not considered a gang-related incident.”

Investigation at the scene also led to the arrest of Norma Alvayero, 18, of Perry on a charge of possession of alcohol under legal age and two unidentified females, ages 16 and 15, on charges of minor in possession of alcohol.

The cause of the brawl is unknown at this time, and the incident is still under investigation, Hill said. Also responding were Dallas County Deputy Sheriffs, Boone County Deputy Sheriffs and Dallas County EMS.

  1. Only one drunken brawl on a holiday weekend? Granted, that’s one too many, but I can recall a time when drunken brawls were common about every weekend. Truth be told, Perry is not the rootin’, tootin’, heck-raising town it was in days of yore.
