Asbestos abatement is scheduled to begin May 1 in the first phase of the $10 million Perry Middle School renovation project.

A Perry Community School District (PCSD) special election will be held Tuesday, March 3, offering voters the chance to approve the district’s updated revenue purpose statement, which outlines how Secure an Advanced Vision for Education (SAVE) funds can be spent.

SAVE funds, more commonly known as the penny sales tax, are used by school districts across Iowa specifically to support school infrastructure and technology needs. If PCSD voters approve the new revenue purpose statement, Perry will be able to spend SAVE funds for the duration of the penny sales tax, which will expire in 2050.

Voter approval of the updated revenue purpose statement would allow the PCSD Board of Directors to move ahead with needed improvements to the Perry Middle School, which was built in 1960 and is overdue for mechanical upgrades.

A Yes vote will not increase taxes. The SAVE penny sales tax will continue to be collected across the state regardless of whether this measure is approved. Approval will simply allow the PCSD to access future SAVE funds and use them for the Perry Middle School. It will not change the current sales tax rate.

School district residents in Dallas and Greene counties will vote at the McCreary Community Building at 1800 Pattee St. in Perry. School district residents in Boone County will cast their ballots at the Boone County Shed at 262 284th St. in Berkley. Polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.

A sample ballot for the special election is available here and on the Dallas County Elections office website.
