BOONE — The Perry wrestlers will enter the holiday break on a high note after the Bluejays posted a pair of victories in Raccoon River Conference action Thursday.
Perry received a clutch win by pinfall from Erick Funez at 160 pounds to help secure a 39-36 win over ADM, with the Bluejays claiming a 51-21 victory over the host Toreadors in their second dual. No report was available regarding the outcome of the ADM vs. Boone match.
The first Bluejay dual opened at 182 pounds, with Cole Snyder winning by pin. ADM seized an 18-6 lead before a pin from Cole Nelson at 106 and a forfeit to Riece Graham at 113 tied the match.
The Tigers held a 27-18 edge until a decision by Jacob Nelson at 132 and pins by Kaleb Olejniczak (138) and Bryan Funez (145) pushed the Bluejays into a 33-27 lead with three matches remaining.
ADM won a decision at 152 to move to within three points, at 33-30, but Erick Funez ended the drama by pinning Hunter Kinzie in 3 minutes, 42 seconds at 160 for a 39-30 lead, assuring the team win for Perry despite a loss by fall at 170.
Olejniczak and Jered Narber (170) both won by pin against Boone, with Jacon Nelson claiming a decision. Perry received forfeits from Boone to Cole Nelson (106), Graham (113), Tanner Burgin (120), Alex Fickbohm (126), Justin Stammer (152) and Carlos Gonzalez (220).
Heavyweight Sebastian Hernandez wrestled once but was unable to collect a win. The Jays left 285 open against Boone and left 195 open against both opponents.
Tucker Strough won a decision in junior varsity action against ADM, with Leonard Jacobson, Ever Tobar, Charley Guardado and Tomas Lopez all won by fall, with Brady Caldwell scoring a pin in JV action against Boone.
Perry returns to action Jan. 3 when they host Bondurant-Farrar and Van Meter/Earlham. They will then compete in the Ames Tournament Jan. 5.
