Cold weather and uncomfortable winds are far from unexpected early in a track season, and both conditions were on full display Thursday at Kaufman Track as Perry opened their outdoor campaign by hosting the Davis Family Relays.

Perry finished third in the boys team standings fifth on the girls side of the meet. Des Moines Christian won the boys portion with 132 points, with AC/GC second at 112 and Perry third at 99, with Panorama (96), Carroll (95) and Saydel (29) following. Panorama dominated the girls action with 167 points, with Carroll (112), AC/GC (109), Winterset (77), Perry (72) and Saydel (21) also in action.

Sophomore Tyler Fessler had a strong opener for Perry. He was second in the 200 in 24.26 seconds and third in the 400 in 55.45. Kato Dougan was fourth for the Jays in the former in 24.84, with Kaleb Olejniczak second in the latter in 54.17.

Brandon Kenyon was second in the 800 (2 minutes, 11.86 seconds), with Eduardo Sanchez sixth in the 1600 (5:31.4) while Olejncizak was second in the 400 low hurdles (1:03.06) while Jared Narber placed fourth in the 110 hurdles (19 seconds even).

Perry’s boys scored field points only in the long jump, where Dougan (17 feet, 11-1/4 inches) was fourth and Olejniczak (17’8-3/4) fifth.

Fessler, Kenyon, Zachary Thompson and Mana Martinez won the 4×400 in 3:44.78, with Martinez, Thompson, Donald Chavez and Byron Melendrez winning the distance medley in 4:08.85.

Chavez, Melendrez, Dougan and Justin Stammer (2nd, 48.53) ran the 4×100 and Chavez, Melendrez, Stammer and Jordan Long (2nd, 1:48.82) the 4×200, with Miguel Constanza, Alex Nunez, Jeb Stewart and Collin Malmberg (3rd, 10:32.94) competing in the 4×800 and Narber, Stammer, Carlos Calderon and Cole Snyder (4th, 1:17.04) the shuttle hurdle.

The Jayettes placed twice in the long jump, with Jasmine Shriver landing third at 14’1-/34 and Quinn Whiton fifth at 13’11-1/2 while Rylynn Gilmore’s shove of 30’7 was good enough for fourth in the shot put.

The sprint medley foursome of Whiton, Shriver, Isabel Saemisch and Sid Vancil was victorious in 2:00.5, the fastest time by a Perry quartet in the event since 2010. Vancil ran a 2:32 800-meter anchor and erased a 50-meter deficit to carry the host to victory in the distance medley relay, with Whiton, Shriver and Damaris Robles helping produce a clocking of 4:45.83.

The 4×400 unit of Robles, Shriver, Saemish and Vancil were third in 4:45.04, with Jaqueline Guardado, Julissa Calderon, Cindy Troung and Joanna Rodriguez fourth in the 4×800 in 12:12.69.

Perry was fifth in both the 4×100 (1:04.59) and 4×200 (2:14.29), with Emma Humpal, Star Love, Breanna Ackerman and Gaby Chavez running the former and Troung, Calderon, Brooklyn Dekoter and Sandra Perez the latter.

Vancil was third (29.56) and Whiton fifth (29.98) in the 200, with Saemisch fifth (1:13.74) and Guardado sixth (1:15.05) in the 400.

Senior Grace Stewart ran personal-best times in the 1500 (5:32.86) and 3000 (11:40.79), placing second and third, respectively.

Perry returns to action, weather permitting, at the Hugh Cavanaugh Coed Relays in Woodward Thursday.
