Scammers selling fake sports sponsorships steal from legitimate local sponsors of public school programs, such as ThePerryNews.com.

The Perry Community School District was alerted this week to a possible scam by someone claiming to represent PHS and offering to sell advertising for PHS sports sponsorships.

“The PCSD is not associated with” this possible scam, said Perry High School Student Activities Director Tom Lipovac. He said the Perry school district provides posters and pocket schedules for the sports programs free of charge.

The email form of the scammer’s pitch looks like this:

Hi Bluejays Fan:),

Happy summer!! I’m working on the upcoming 2018 football/fall sports schedule cards for Perry High School, and wanted to check with you about being a sponsor. The pocket sized schedule cards come out this fall, they will include all available fall sports, they will be in full color, and you’ll be on all 3,000 cards if you participate. Perry High School receives the cards at no cost, and you will also receive 500 cards to give out. We need to sell two ads, one for the front and one for the back. The cost of one ad is $300 or $500 for both spots. Please let me know if you would like to see a previous card. I can email it to you. The ad is payable in the fall after delivery.

Thank you,
Jane Lester

Local businesses and organizations have been targeted by the scam.

“This has been sent to me twice this summer,” said Hotel Pattee General Manager Aaron Lenz. He said he did some research and concluded “this is a pretty well established scam” and “not a legitimate operation.”

Lipovac said there are many legitimate ways for community members to support activities in the PCSD.

“If local businesses or organizations are interested in sponsorship opportunities at the PPAC, PAC, Dewey Field or with scoreboards,” he said, “contact the Student Activities Department” at 515-465-8336.
