Sean Riley, 17, of Perry was welcomed to the Perry American Legion Post 85 last week, where he gave an impromptu discussion of his experiences at last summer’s Iowa Hawkeye Boys State gathering at Camp Dodge in Johnston.

Riley is the son of Lori Riley of Perry. He is one of several hundred young men who attended the annual Iowa Hawkeye Boys State event, which is open to students who have completed their junior year of high school.

Riley is a student of Perry High School, where he is active in extracurricular activities such as the National Honor Society and basketball. He is an avid Green Bay Packers fan and a collector of military memorabilia. He is on the President’s List at the Des Moines Area Community College.

Riley told the gathered Legionnaires he will be attending the University of Northern Iowa in the fall and will study history and business. He was also honored this week by his selection for Academic All State honors.

Riley was chosen by the members of Perry’s American Legion Post 85 to attend Iowa Hawkeye Boys State on the basis of interest, leadership and scholastic qualities, according to Post 85 Commander Mike Kelley.

During the five-day conference, the young people studied city, county and state government and learned to administer the laws of Iowa. Other activities included participating in legislative sessions, campaigning, holding party rallies, debating and voting, all contributing to the young people’s deeper knowledge of parliamentary procedure.

In addition to their political activities, the boys heard motivational speakers and addresses by several local and state government officials. The week culminated June 19 with the final general assembly, when awards and scholarships were announced.

Iowa Hawkeye Boys State is sponsored by the Iowa Department of the American Legion. Student delegates will be supervised by commissioners of Iowa Hawkeye Boys State, the Iowa Highway Patrol, agencies of Iowa government, the Iowa National Guard, the U. S. Military Services and Military Academies, members of professional career fields–such as attorneys, college admission counselors and teachers–and former Iowa Hawkeye Boys State delegates. Staff are always available for assistance.
