With the U.S. and Iowa flags flying proudly over the recently restored Walt Anderson Field, the Rippey Demons and Crystal Cubs took to the field Saturday morning as part of the three-day tournament hosted by the Demons.

Rain threatened to disrupt the original schedule of two Friday evening games followed by four games Saturday and the concluding two games Sunday. The reincarnated Rippey Demons are hosting the South Dakota Jackalopes from Sioux Falls, S.D., the Crystal Cubs from Crystal, Minnesota, and the St. Michael Angels from St. Michael, Minnesota.

Staffing the restored concession stand Saturday morning were Mackenzie Denhardt, Noah Juergensen, Lyle Rychnovsky and George Millard. Available delicacies included pulled pork sandwiches courtesy of Kevin and Mary Hick and traditional baseball concessions, including popcorn and unshelled peanuts, provided by the Friends of Rippey.

Perry High School student Lilly Riley thoroughly swept and cleaned the concession stand, earning hours toward her Silver Cord distinguished volunteer service award. All profits will be used to further improve the Walt Anderson Field.

Rippey Baseball Commissioner Mel Murken and Deputy Commissioner Merle Jackson spent many hours getting the field in great shape for the tournament and for the Old Timers Game scheduled for July 31 as part of the Rippey Sesquicentennial celebrations. Their restoration of the old grandstands was especially notable.

The new flags and repainted flag pole over Walt Anderson Field were donated by former Rippey resident Judy McElheney.
