Round up purchases at Fareway July 18-23 and help the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Starting next week, the Fareway store in Perry will ask customers to round-up to their purchases to next dollar and donate the difference to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

Fareway’s annual MDA fundraiser, aiming to free kids and adults from muscular dystrophy, ALS and related life-threatening diseases, will run July 18-23.

“Thanks to the generosity of Fareway’s employees and customers,” said Erin Steffen, executive director of MDA of Iowa, “we can help MDA invest in lifesaving research and support programs for these individuals so they can live the life they’ve always imagined and experience the world without any limits.”

Fareway first teamed up with MDA in 1992, and the Boone-based grocery chain has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the MDA through golf tournaments, bowl-a-thons, can collections an annual Shamrock pin-up program and other events. Steffen said the support helps MDA provide the families it serves with critical resources and support.

Fareway CEO Reynolds W. Cramer said Fareway is “excited to again partner with the Muscular Dystrophy Association on the Fareway Floats tradition and Round-Up Campaign. Fareway has been a strong supporter of MDA for nearly 25 years, and we are proud to help lead the fight to free individuals, and the families that love them, from the harmful effects of muscle diseases.”

To help sweeten the deal, Fareway will also partner July 22 and 23 with the Dr Pepper Snapple Group to conduct the Fareway Floats campaign. Every A&W Root Beer float purchased in the two-day event will benefit MDA.

The nearest A&W to the Perry area is in Jefferson at 300 N. Elm St. Urbandale also boasts two A&Ws.

The MDA is the world’s leading nonprofit health agency dedicated to saving and improving the lives of people with muscle disease, including muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other neuromuscular diseases.

  1. Yes, I recall when I used to look forward to the MDA Telethon every year. It has little appeal for me anymore even though its cause is worthy.
