Sally Ann (Johnson) Schomers, 92, of Kansas City, Missouri, and formerly of Perry reposed in the Lord on Jan. 28, 2022.

Sally was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on Aug. 29, 1929, to Charles and Orpha Johnson.

She graduated from Perry High School and attended MacMurray College and the University of Iowa.

In Perry Sally’s friends were the “naughty nine.”

In Perry she was a member of the DAR, and at the University of Iowa she was a member of Pi Beta Phi and enjoyed archery.

Sally met Gerald Schomers in Perry, and the couple later married and had three children. The family lived in Ottumwa.

Sally was active in PEO and as a member of First Presbyterian Church. After moving to Des Moines, she served as an Elder and Bible teacher at the Westminster United Presbyterian Church.

After her divorce from Jerry, Sally worked at National Handcraft and was a proofreader at Meredith Corp. She had a keen eye for detail and an incredible memory for song lyrics.

She loved to play the piano and tap dance. Her joy was to have the family around the piano singing at holidays.

Sally enjoyed family time at Lake Panorama, especially slow boat rides at sunset. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren and spoiling them.

Sally developed a faith in Christ in the mid-1970s and prayed faithfully for her family through the decades. She was often found reading her Bible.

Her assisted-living caregivers describe her as witty and sassy, even as chronic pain and disability from Parkinsons worsened. As long as her lipstick was on and her hair was done, life was okay. She would spontaneously start singing a song related to whatever was going on and could always sing along with a hymn, even when speech became more difficult.

Those left to honor her memory and her faith are her brother, Raymond (Jeananne) Johnson of Clive; son, Michael (Gail) Schomers of Tampa, Florida; daughter, Susan (Jim) Swanson of Kansas City, Missouri; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and seven nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her ex-husband, Gerald, in 2003; her son, Tom, in 2014; and her sister, Nancy Mooney in 2017.

Sally was beloved by many who are grateful to have enjoyed her spirit of love, humor and faith.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5 at the Iles Funeral Homes Westover Chapel at 6337 Hickman Road in Des Moines, with a luncheon following the service at the funeral home.
