Perry High School will host musicians from seven area high schools this weekend at the 36th annual Perry Band Olympics.

Drawing more than 1,000 students, the PHS event is known statewide as the Super Bowl of solo and ensemble musical contests.

Playing begins Saturday at 8 a.m. at 17 performance centers around the high school, with an awards ceremony at 3:30 p.m. PHS musicians will be joined by student players from Ankeny High School, Ankeny Centennial High School, Don Bosco Catholic High School, Dowling Catholic High School, Waukee High School, Webster City High School and West Des Moines Valley High School.

Judges rate the performers and give helpful feedback. PHS Band Director Rachel Poss and Perry Performing Arts Center Manager Steve Cook will be on hand to coordinate the day-long event, which costs $3 to attend.

The Perry Band Olympics is open to the public.
